It’s Negotiation Time! Keep These 4 Things in Mind

It’s finally here! The moment you and your realtor have been waiting for - time to make an offer on your dream home. While this may be one of the most stressful times in the home buying process, keep in mind that there are usually ways to be creative and get what you want.

  1. Remember to be assertive. It’s our job as your realtor to consult on the best and most effective way to present an offer, but always remember that this is your home and if you have concerns or specific instructions, you need to speak up. Realtors have years of practice and have worked on a variety of deals, but we always want to ensure you’re comfortable with every decision made.

  2. Be willing to walk away. As hard as it sounds, you must have it in your mind that nothing is set in stone and there's a chance that the deal will not close. If the seller is unwilling to come to an agreement that you’re comfortable with, share with them that this is your last offer before you move onto other options.

  3. Remember that they might want to sell the house more than you want to buy it. Be patient and allow for the back and forth to take place without becoming frustrated.

  4. Relax since you’re informed. Data is on your side and realtors will share with you the neighborhood comps for homes that have recently sold in the area. We work to be sure you’re never overpaying, so it really will just come down to the details.

Buying a home doesn’t have to be stressful. Just ensure that you and your realtor have spoken before and offer is made about what you’re comfortable with and how much flexibility you have. At the end of the day, both parties do what they can to make it work, so happy negotiating!
